Gilberto G. Gracia, 83, passed away Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas. He was born June 13, 1934, to the late Jesus and Efijenia Gracia. He is preceded in death by his son: Daniel Orlando Gracia.
Gilberto is survived by his wife: Carmen Hinojosa Gracia; children: Gilberto Antonio (Julie) Gracia, Javier Omar (Lucy) Gracia, Letty (Leo Jr.) Sanchez, Sandra Gracia Wise, Gerardo Jesus (Belinda) Gracia; grandchildren: Gilberto, Jr., Bianca (Angel) Alonzo, Andrea, Kendra Lee (Octaviano) Uresti, Daleena Borrego, Danielle, Daniel, Gerrad, Hannah, Haille, Devin, Leah, Carmen, Cody and Gerardo; great-grandchildren: Evan, Darrius, Jody, Jaiven, Audrina, Ocxaiver and Aiden; sister: Enedelia (Mario) Moreno.
At 18 Sergeant Gilberto Gracia joined the military where he served faithfully from 1952 to 1994. As a member of the National Guard, he served in Honduras and was called to active duty to participate in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He has received numerous awards for his exemplary service including the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Texas Faithful Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Loan Star Distinguished Service Medal for his service to the State of Texas. He is a Life Member of the National Guard Association of Texas, a Member of the American Legion and received the Department of the Army and the Air Force National Guard Bureau Certificate of Service in recognition of 38 years of service in the National Guard. On June 1, 1950, he married Carmen Hinojosa. Now 83 years young, Sgt. Gracia and his wife Carmen recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm Monday, September 11, 2017 with a prayer of the Holy Rosary being recited at 7:00 pm at Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am, Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in McAllen. Interment will follow to Roselawn Cemetery in McAllen.
