MCALLEN - Velia B. Valadez passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the blessed age of 90. She is preceded in death by her loving husband: Manuel Valadez Sr.
Velia is remembered for her caring nature, being a great mother and dedicated wife, and her joy of nature. In her later years she enjoyed filling her living room with photographs, which helped her stay connected with family and friends. Her latest love was Canela her pet dog, which she rescued.
Velia was born March 3, 1925. Her parents were Cayetano Barrera II and Josephine Bennet. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Olga Gonzalez (Twin), Alma Siporin, Olivia Saenz, Ana Guerra, and Tula Sanchez, and her brother Luis Barrera.
Velia is survived by her children: Manuel (Mary) Valadez Jr., George (Vanessa) Valadez, Silvia (William) Robinson, Javier (Chris) Valadez; grandchildren: Timothy Valadez, Steve Valadez, Catherine Valadez, Anthony McAllister, Monica McAllister; great-grandchildren: Elena and Isabel Valadez. Her surviving siblings are Cayetano Barrera III and Aida Torres.
Viewing will be held Friday, March 27, 2015 from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Rivera Funeral Home in McAllen. Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm. The Mass will be at 9:00 am Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in McAllen. Interment will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Mission.
