Consuelo "Connie" Martinez

Consuelo “Connie” Garza was born on January 18, of the year 1949 in Muskegon, Michigan.  Her parents, Jesus V. and San Juanita Garza moved to Alamo, Texas while she was still an infant.  She and her younger brother, Luis, lived in Alamo throughout her childhood until she began her college education at Howard Payne University where she earned her teaching degree.

Her teaching career started in Corpus Christi, where during that time she met her future husband, Seferino Martinez, at church.  After an approximate 2-year courtship, they married on June 30th, 1973 at Gollihar Baptist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas.

In 1976, they relocated to McAllen, Texas.  They had two children, Stephen Martinez born in May of 1979 and Sharon Martinez born in June of 1984.  Connie continued teaching until her retirement in January of 2012.

God blessed her with a daughter in law, Cristina Delfin in December of 2007, and a son in law, Roberto Espinoza, in July of 2008.  God continued to bless her with a total of 4 grandchildren: Daniel Alexander in November of 2009, Sophia Rebekah on January 18, 2012 to Stephen and Cristina; and Aiden Foxx in January of 2013 and Gavin Jett in September of 2016 to Sharon and Roberto.

She touched many lives thru her teaching career and her interactions with others showing the Love of Jesus and sharing His Salvation.  She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend.  She joined her parents and brother in Heaven July 7, 2019.  She is survived by her husband, 2 children, 4 grandchildren, several nephews and nieces, and many beloved friends.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 1:00 PM with a Celebration of Life to follow at 2:00 PM at Rivera Funeral Home,1901 Pecan Blvd. in McAllen.

In lieu of flowers the Martinez family is asking for memorial contributions be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center in memory of Consuelo "Connie" Martinez.
