Genaro Castillo, 80, of Mcallen, TX entered eternal rest Monday October 14th, 2019.
Genaro Castillo was born on September 19th 1939 to Luis Castillo and Pomposa Castillo in McAllen, TX where he served as Chair of precinct 27 for nearly four decades and after retirement as an election poll worker he also owned two restaurants Zesto Drive-in and My Cafeteria before going to work as a planner and inspector for Hidalgo County Precinct 3, where he was employed for 22 years. He was one of the originals when the Planning Department was initially created in March of 1987 alongside Lupe Rivera, Roy Gonzalez, Pete Torres, Emilio Garcia, Yolanda Jackson and Irma Castillo. In addition to his professional life and political activism, he has been a committed volunteer for the McAllen Independent School District. He was also a very active member at St. Margaret Mary Church in Pharr as well as St. Joseph the Worker in McAllen where he played his guitar in the choir. Not only was Genaro a hard worker but he was also very committed to his loving family. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife: Maria Carmen Castillo†; daughter: Jennifer Castillo†; brothers: Roy Castillo† and Jose Castillo†; sisters: Elida Serna†, Esther Gonzalez†, Antonia Estrada†, and Maria Navarro†.
Genaro is survived by his children: Genaro Castillo Jr. (Phyllis), Belinda Sagredo (Reynaldo), and Sandra Gonzalez (David); his 7 grandchildren: Genaro Castillo III, Erick Castillo, Amber Leal-Arellano (Angel), Hector Peralez Jr., Eloy Peralez, Rebecca Sagredo, and Alexandria Sagredo; as well as his 7 great-grandchildren: Kirsten Castillo, Samuel Castillo, Genaro Castillo IV, Angel Arellano III, Julius Arellano, Jordan Arellano, and Adysin Peralez; one brother: Daniel Castillo (Alicia).
Visitation for Genaro will be held Thursday October 17th from 4pm - 9pm. Rosary will begin at 7pm at Rivera Funeral Home in McAllen, TX. Funeral Mass will be held Friday October 18th at Saint Joseph the Worker in McAllen, TX at 10 am. Followed by burial at Roselawn Cemetery in McAllen, TX. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen.
