Gerardo "Jerry" Sanchez, a man whose humor was as infectious as his generosity, left this world on September 20, 2024, but not without leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. Born on October 2, 1965, in McAllen, Texas, to the late Arimon Sanchez Sr. and the still radiant Amada Sanchez, Jerry's life was a testament to laughter, service, and a little bit of mischief.
Jerry, a true McAllen native, breathed his last in the same city where he first saw the light of day. He was a proud graduate of McHi's class of '85 and later honed his technical skills with a diploma in TV/VCR repair. But it wasn't just electronics that Jerry fixed; he mended spirits with his quick wit and easy smile.
For two decades, Jerry was more than an employee to Dr. Joseph McCoy; he was a fixture, a friend, and a dedicated employee. His work was only one aspect of his life—Jerry's true passion lay in his community involvement. As an active member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and a staunch Knight of Columbus, Jerry's faith was as strong as his sense of duty. Whether he was serving as a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Assembly at Our Lady of Sorrows or as an A.C.T.S. brother, Jerry's commitment to his faith community was unwavering.
Jerry's dedication to the youth, evidenced by his ten years as a CCD Program volunteer and security guard, showed his belief in guiding the next generation. But it wasn't all serious business for Jerry. As a godfather, he showered Dr. Ashley Sanchez, Sarah Michelle Rios, and Rubi Quintero with unconditional love and laughter.
When Jerry wasn't serving his community or making someone chuckle, he could be found indulging in his love for music, playing cards on the computer, or getting engrossed in the latest crime show. A true sports enthusiast, Jerry's loyalty to the Dallas Cowboys was as steadfast as his commitment to his weekly pot numbers and lottery tickets—a gamble that always paid off in stories, if not in riches.
Jerry's wit was as sharp as a tack, and his generous spirit knew no bounds. He was the guy who could light up a room faster than a neon sign and make friends faster than he could deal a hand of cards. Those lucky enough to have been part of Jerry's life would say he was not just funny; he was the life of the party, a friend who became family, and a generous soul who never hesitated to share whatever he had.
Though Jerry has taken his final bow, his legacy is carried on by his beloved mother, Amada, his siblings Lourdes, Maria De Jesus (and her husband Rodger), Juan Manuel (and his wife Liza), Dr. Jose Antonio (and his wife Esther), Arimon Jr. (and his wife Denis), Irma (and her husband Tripp), Sylvia (and her husband Juan), and Dora Elia. His laughter echoes in the lives of his numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, who were all touched by his relentless humor and kindness.
Preceded in death by his father, Arimon Sanchez Sr., and his niece, Davanni Sofia Campos, Jerry's departure leaves a void that will be felt deeply by all who knew him. Yet, in the stories they share and the memories they cherish, Jerry's spirit will dance on—a reminder that life is to be lived with joy, laughter, and maybe a lottery ticket or two for good measure.
In a world that often takes itself too seriously, Jerry was a breath of fresh air. He showed us that a hearty laugh could be the best medicine, that generosity enriches the giver as much as the receiver, and that in the end, the relationships we forge are the true treasures of a life well-lived. So, as we bid farewell to Jerry, let's honor his memory by living as he did—with a joke on our lips, kindness in our hearts, and an unwavering faith in the power of community. Jerry, you will be missed, but never forgotten.
