McAllen ~ Jose Arturo Garza, Sr., completed his earthly journey on August 27, 2025, in his hometown of McAllen, Texas. Born on July 20, 1938, also in McAllen, Arturo’s life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to education, his country, and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Arturo was the cherished husband of Mary Garza, and together they raised a family that includes three sons: Greg (Lisa), Jose Arturo Jr. (Nancy), and Juan Jose Garza (Anna). He was a source of strength and inspiration not only to his immediate family but also to his younger sister, Mary Thomas (Lane). Arturo was preceded in passing by his parents, Gregorio and Josefina Garza, and his older brother, Roberto Vela (Mary). Their legacy of love and unity continues to live on through the family they nurtured. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Samuel, Joseph, Nicolas, Lucas, Dominique, and Juan Jose, Jr.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, his brother-in-law, Lane Thomas, and his sister-in-law, Mary Rodriguez.
While serving in the United States Navy, Arturo completed studies in Scientific Crime Detection from the Institute of Applied Science in Chicago, Illinois. He then went on to complete a Bachelors in Education at Pan American College and furthered his studies with a Masters in Education at Texas A&I University. He dedicated 37 years to enlightening young minds as a teacher. His passion for education was surpassed only by his love for Christ.
Arturo was proud of his service in the United States Navy and he served his country with honor and dignity. His service reflected his deep sense of patriotism and his unwavering belief in the principles of freedom and democracy. Upon returning to civilian life, he continued to embody the values he had defended, becoming a role model for both his students and his fellow citizens.
Arturo’s Christian faith was the cornerstone of his existence. He lived his life as a reflection of Christ’s teachings, exuding kindness, patience, and compassion. He was a member of Luz Para Las Naciones in Mission, TX for 30 years. His involvement in church activities and his commitment to living a life of service made him a respected and beloved figure in his religious community.
