Juan Alfredo Alvarez, Sr.
August 23, 1942 – May 20, 2025
Juan Alfredo Alvarez, Sr., a devoted family man, respected educator, decorated veteran, and steadfast servant of God, entered eternal rest on May 20, 2025, at 5:50 p.m. He was 82 years old.
Born on August 23, 1942, in Mission, Texas, Juan was the eldest child of Juan Benavidez Alvarez and Guadalupe Alvarado Alvarez. From childhood, he was nurtured in a home grounded in faith, integrity, and perseverance—principles that would define the legacy of his remarkable life.
Juan is preceded in death by his beloved parents, his sister Maria Libby Alvarez † (Carlos) Peña, and his brothers Jose Luis † (Maria) / (Zoraida†) Alvarez and Eduardo † (Esther †) Alvarez. He leaves behind his cherished wife, Blanca Alvarez, and a close-knit family who adored him: siblings Oscar (Norma) Alvarez and Thelma (Raul) Olvera; sons Gregory (Elizabeth) Alvarez and Juan Alfredo (Cynthia) Alvarez Jr.; daughters Vanessa (Michael) de Leon, Karla (Orlando) Solis, and Laura (Michael) Ortiz. He is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Joshua (Ariam) Alvarez, Celeste (Jose) Villalobos, Grace Alvarez, Ricardo (Stephanie) Mata III, Alexis Dominique (Joshua) Reeder, Andrea Daniela (Geovanny) Alfaro, Eren Michael de Leon, Madeline “Maddy” Lenae Ortiz, Maya Lucia Ortiz, Jonathan Alvarez, Carissa Alvarez, Julissa Alvarez, Andre Alvarez, Zoe Alvarez, Anthony “Tony Maroni” Alvarez, Lilian Alvarez, Bailey Alvarez, Gabriel Vasquez, and Alexa Vasquez. His legacy continues through his greatgrandchildren: Charlee Idalou Mata, Honey Marylou Mata, and Stella Rose Mata-Reeder.
Juan answered the call to serve his country during the Vietnam War, rising with distinction from the rank of E-1 to E-5 in under two years—a testament to his courage, leadership, and dedication. He was the recipient of several military honors, including:
★Army Commendation Medal for “Sustained Acts of Heroism”
★National Defense Service Medal
★Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars
★Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device
★Sharpshooter Rifle (Marksmanship Award)
★Good Conduct Medal
His wartime service left an enduring impression on his character and often became the subject of spirited stories he shared with pride, offering insight into both the hardships and triumphs of
military life.
Upon returning home, Juan pursued higher education with relentless determination. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with a minor in History from Pan American University in
1969, and later, a Master’s degree in Educational Administration in 1995 from the University of Texas Pan American. These academic milestones set the stage for a distinguished and influential
career in education.
Juan began his professional journey as a teacher and coach with La Joya ISD, where he led football, basketball, and track teams. His passion and leadership soon earned him the roles of
Athletic Director and Head Football Coach. He continued to shape young minds in Hidalgo ISD, where he served as a history teacher, Athletic Director, Head Football Coach, Assistant Principal
at Díaz Junior High, and ultimately as Principal of Hidalgo High School. His unwavering commitment to student success made him both a mentor and role model to countless students and
a respected leader among his peers.
Juan culminated his career with Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD, serving with distinction as Chief of Staff / Deputy Superintendent of Human Resources. His visionary leadership and dedication to
educational excellence left an indelible mark on the district and community.
While his professional accomplishments were many, Juan’s greatest joy came from his family. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he found his purpose in the
unconditional love he shared with his family. He was a steady presence, a source of wisdom, and a wellspring of joy and encouragement to every generation he touched.
Juan was a man of unwavering faith. He lived a life reflective of God’s love—marked by humility, kindness, and servant leadership. He led not through words alone, but by example, and
his legacy of integrity, devotion, and grace will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
Service and Celebration of Life
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a memorial service beginning at 7:00 PM at Rivera Funeral Home, 1901 Pecan Boulevard, McAllen, Texas.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at 9:30 AM, followed by interment at 11:00 AM at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery, 2520 Inspiration Rd., Mission, Texas.
A Celebration of Life will follow at Iglesia Bautista Memorial, 1100 W. Mahl St., Edinburg, Texas.
