Juan Antonio Lopez, 71, of Laredo, Texas, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Juan was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose life was centered around faith, family, and hard work. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Bertha A. Lopez, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and created a wonderful family united by love and faith.
Juan is preceded in death by his mother, Maria De Jesus Valdez, and his parents, Nicolas and Felipa Lopez.
As a proud father, Juan leaves behind his children: Cynthia Ann Ruiz (Javier), Christine Yvette Guerrero (Jorge), Michelle Lynn Salinas (Vidal), and Mark Anthony Lopez (Jaclyn). Juan also served as father to his youngest sister-in- law, Alma Leticia Cavazos (Adrian), and was a cherished Grandfather to Ashlyn Cyann Ruiz, Tyler Anthony Ruiz, Aubrey Ann Ruiz, Jordan Anthony Salinas and anticipated the birth of Baby Lopez. Juan is survived by his sister Sari Chavarria (Fernando), and siblings Mari Valdez, Jose Luis Flores, Martha Flores, Leticia Flores, Margarita Barboza, Laura and Alicia Moncada and other close family members.
Juan attended JW Nixon High School and graduated in the class of 1972. Shortly after Juan accepted a call for duty to serve his country with the United States Navy. After years of service, he was honorably discharged in 1979 and received his degree in Criminal Justice.
Upon completion, he began his law enforcement career with the Webb County Sheriff’s Office. In 1981, he joined the United States Border Patrol and promoted to a Supervisory Border Patrol Agent. Thereafter, was promoted to Patrol Agent in Charge of the Falfurrias, Brownsville, and McAllen Stations. Juan retired after 30 years of service with multiple distinguished awards and recognitions for his excellent leadership with the United States Border Patrol.
In addition to his leadership roles in law enforcement, Juan was selected as the Grand Knight and Deputy Grand Knight at Holy Spirit Catholic Church and led with the development of the Stations of the Cross. He went on to serve as District Deputy and the Faithful Navigator at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and worked diligently with the Knights of Columbus at various parishes across the region. Juan always made himself readily available when it was time to serve in his community and faith.
Juan will be remembered for his kind heart, strong values, and unwavering dedication to those he loved and served. Juan touched the lives of many and left behind a legacy of strength and kindness.
A funeral service will be held to honor Juan’s life at Rivera Funeral Home (1901 Pecan Blvd. McAllen, Tx 78501) on Thursday, August 21st from 5:00 – 9:00 PM (Rosary at 7:00) followed by a funeral mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church (1108 W Hackberry Ave. McAllen Tx 78501) on Friday, August 22nd at 10:00 AM.
Juan will be deeply missed, and his legacy will forever be remembered in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
