Maria De la Luz Lopez Obituary

On March 15, 1964, Maria de La Luz joined Monico† and Lupita’s† large family. From an early age, Maria totally embraced her calling as a loving sister to her many siblings and honored her parents until the day they were called home. From their example, she learned her greatest life lesson: love the LORD your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. This was her life code: to love others with actions and not just with words.

She met the man of her dreams in her youth and an enduring love story began. When speaking about him, Mary adoringly called him, “My Lupe.”  Together, Lupe and Mary raised their four loving daughters and grandchildren with the greatest of sacrifices. United as one, they took the time to give them all the love, comfort and security they had. She and Lupe spent their Sundays together visiting her beloved Lopez family and/or attending family parties or celebrations. Hand in hand, they created many loving memories in their 32 years of marriage. Lupe and Mary had a love which many would hope to find in this lifetime. In this same manner, she doted on her nephews and nieces from both sides of the family, and was like a second mother figure to many of them. As they grew, she remained close to them and was part of their lives. She also remained close to her own aunts and uncles; giving them of her time and honoring them as she was taught. She was the wife, mother, sister, aunt and niece who gave of herself and never said“No” when needed.

Friends, family and strangers will never forget Mary’s unique hospitality when they visited her home as she displayed her love through deeds. She quickly whipping up a meal fit for a king. She made you feel right at home. Many a time did she open her home to family and friends who needed a helping hand, but she did it with so much joy that it was hard for them to leave. But that was just her style. She never did anything for attention or personal gain. She wore her heart on her sleeve and what you experienced was her genuine ability to connect. She was the person who went to HEB or the doctor’s office and left with a friend or two. She was the one who gave up her seat to a stranger. She was the one who gladly gave up her last dollar for a homeless person whom others wouldn’t acknowledge. She was a woman of great faith who took the time to pray for others and visit them in the hospital. She was the wife, mother, sister, aunt, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law and friend who comforted you and wiped away your hurt and tears.True to her name, her life was the light that radiated God’s grace to others. She did not judge- she loved. She was the heavenly beauty with large brown eyes who communicated her love through her gaze. And it is this gaze that we will miss.

On August 29 Mary closed her eyes to this world and opened them to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mary is survived by her loving husband Lupe Lopez and her four daughters: Patricia Lopez, Monica Gonzalez, Jennifer (Adrian) Pina and Lulu Lopez. Her grandchildren are Sara del Valle, Sophia Figueroa, Arahlynn Alvarado, Ariadne Alvarado,Arys Alvarado, Jennalee Pina and Juliet Pina. She leaves behind the following brothers and sisters whom she adored: Estela Gonzalez, Monico (Filomena) Gonzalez, Lupina Moran, Jose (Leticia) Gonzalez, Yolanda (Reynaldo) Barrera, Cristobal (Linda) Gonzalez, Irene (Israel) Soto, Sylvia Gonzalez, Margarita Gonzalez, Boonie (Fred) Garza, Martin (Maggie) Gonzalez, Susie Gonzalez, Juan (Melissa) Gonzalez, Isaias (Rosa) Gonzalez, Mauricio (Sandra) Gonzalez, Elias (Jennifer) Gonzalez, Rebecca (Juan Carlos) Aguirre and hundreds of nieces and nephews.
