Maria Elva Moreno, 95, of McAllen was called by our Lord on Sunday, November, 20, 2022, dying from complications resulting from a recent stroke. Elva was born on May 18, 1927 in Camargo, Tamaulipas to Cristobal and Natividad Longoria and had two siblings, Eutimio Longoria and Maria Elsa Longoria de Rodriguez. She lived most of her life in McAllen married to her husband of 50 years and raising her family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jose R. Moreno and her son, Ruben "Coach" Moreno. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Pena, and her son, Jesse (Alicia) Moreno; and by her grandchildren: Marco Pena, Jesse Moreno, Luis Moreno, Marc Garcia, Tanya Torres, George Moreno III and Tracy Hooks; and by her great-grandchildren: Mercedes, Antonio, Rebekah, Catalina, Jesse and Naomi.
After the death of her father, Elva came to South Texas as a child to live with an aunt and to go to school. Elva met her husband at Renown Foods canning plant where they both worked. Elva had several other occupations. She worked in the restaurant industry at a Furr's Cafeteria and as a manager at a Whataburger. She also worked as a clerk at the social security administration office. Elva played an instrumental role in the founding and development of Happy Valley Adult Day Cares owned by her son, Jesse and his wife.
She was a strong woman grounded in her catholic faith and a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. She was a kind and dignified soul who was a caring and solid influence to her children and a loving grandmother and great-grandmother who was known as "Guela and Tita." Her outgoing personality resulted in her making friends with everyone she met and everywhere she went.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, November 25, 2022 with a Holy Rosary being recited at 6:30 pm at Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen. Funeral Mass will be said at 11:30 pm Saturday, November 26, 2022 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in McAllen. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in Mission. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen.
