Edinburg ~ Maria E. Hernandez, 86, entered eternal rest on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Edinburg Regional Medical Center. She was born on Wednesday, February 20, 1935, the daughter of Trinidad and Lilia (de la Rosa) Hernandez. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister: Lucia H. Rodriguez.
Maria started working at a very young age when her parents would travel up north to work in the fields. While she dedicated much of her time to taking care of Ama and Apa, she helped raise and was a second mother to many of her numerous nieces and nephews, grand and great. She was stern when we did something wrong but we all know that she had a soft spot in her heart for all of us. She never forgot a birthday, graduation, special holiday or occasion. We always knew we could count of receiving at the least a card. While she dedicated much of her time to family, she was also very devoted to serving her church, Capilla San Jose in Lull, for a good 50 plus years. She had also been active with Valley Interfaith along with fellow church members fighting for better environmental conditions in the small community of Lull. She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched.
She is survived by her brothers and sisters: Isabel H. (Abelardo†) Chavez of El Paso; Juan (Elvia) Hernandez of Edinburg, Felipe (Eulalia) Hernandez of Edinburg, Yolanda Estela Hernandez of Edinburg and David (Nora) Hernandez of Edinburg; brother-in-law: Joaquin Rodriguez of Edinburg; and numerous nieces and nephews; grandnieces and grandnephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; one great-great-grandniece.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Tuesday, January 4th, 2022 at Rivera Funeral Home, 1901 Pecan Blvd., McAllen with a Holy Rosary being recited at 7:00 pm.
