Maria del Refugio Ibarra

Maria del Refugio Ibarra, 103, entered eternal rest on Thursday, November 9, 2023, surrounded by her loving family at her home in McAllen. She was born on Wednesday, August 4, 1920 in Zapotlanejo, Jalisco, Mexico, the daughter of Jose Gutierrez and Marcelina de la Torre. Maria loved to cook, especially making fresh tortillas for the barbecues every Sunday for the family gatherings. She enjoyed knitting, making a blanket for every grandchild, great, great-great and great-great-great. She spent time gardening and taking care of watering and tending to her flowers. 

Maria is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband: Miguel Ibarra and three daughters, Teresa Gonzalez, Petra Ramirez and Esperanza Suarez.

Maria del Refugio is survived by four children: Rosa Alonso, Jose Ibarra, Ignacio Ibarra, Manuel Ibarra and Amelia Villarreal; nine sisters and one brother; 35 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren, 41 great-great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-great-grandchildren.

Visitations will be held from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Sunday, November 12, 2023 with the recital of the Holy Rosary at 6:30 pm at Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen. Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, November 13, 2023 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in McAllen. Interment will follow at 11:00 am on Monday, November 13, 2023 at Roselawn Cemetery on McAllen. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen.
