Ninfa M. Plata, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 29, 2023 surrounded by her loving Family and Finn. Born on August 25, 1951, in Raymondville, Texas, daughter of Israel and Josefina Mendiola Sr. Ninfa lived a life full of love, compassion, and service.
Ninfa will be remembered as a loving and dedicated wife to her husband, Ben (Babe) of 50 years. Together, they created a home filled with warmth and laughter. As a mother to her son, Benny Plata (Amanda), and daughter, Angela Judith Plata, Ninfa instilled values of kindness, resilience and respect. Her love extended to her granddaughters, Bria and Josie, who were her pride and joy.
Ninfa was a beloved sister to her brothers, Joe Mendiola (Maggie) and Israel Mendiola Jr. (Alicia), her sisters, Noemi Vasquez (Sal) and Nida Garcia (Yogi) and in laws Nonito Lopez Plata Jr. (Norma), Joel Plata (Mary) and Nelda Ortega (Fred). Ninfa was blessed to have many nieces, nephews and friends who loved her.
As a registered nurse and educator, Ninfa dedicated her professional life to the care and education of others. Her passion for helping people was evident. She was an exceptional nurse "a damn good nurse" and educator. Her colleagues and students admired her for her dedication, expertise and compassion. Ninfa's interests included traveling and spending quality time with her family, granddaughters and friends.
As we say goodbye to Ninfa, we celebrate her life, honor her memory, and find comfort in knowing that her love will be forever. Special gratitude and many thanks to MD Anderson, Harbor Hospice and to many friends and neighbors who dedicated their time, love and prayers.
Gathering of family and friends will be held from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen with the Holy Rosary being recited at 6:30 pm. Funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Services will conclude after the church mass. Burial services will take place Friday, September 1, 223 at 11:00 AM at Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito, Texas.
