Simon A. Mendez was called to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 5, 2020 at Rio Grande Regional Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents Felix and Dionicia Mendez; brothers, Esteban Mendez, Pedro Mendez, Johnny Mendez; and a granddaughter, McKinzlee Jae Ramirez.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Elida Mendez; a son, Edward (Marilou) Mendez; a daughter, Debbie Mendez; three grandchildren. Naythen, JayKob, and Emily Mendez; a sister, Beva (Eugenio) Rodriguez; and a brother, Tony (Frances).
Simon graduated from Harlingen High School in 1963 and was a lifelong valley resident. After graduation e proudly served his county in the Navy. He went on to work at Southern Union Gas and retired in 2001. He enjoyed fishing with the family,m and most days he could be found on the golf course. He was known for his ethical values and a firm handshake with him would go a long way. You could count on him to slip a hoke to lighten the moon, and there wasn't a time that you didn't catch him without a smile. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm Thursday, September 10, 2020 with the recital of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 pm at Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen. Funeral Mass will be held at 9:00 am Friday, September 11, 2020 with Military Honors at 10:00 am at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in McAllen. Interment will follow at 11:00 am at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen.
