Sofia Hernandez de Ayala

Sofia Hernandez de Ayala, 86, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Tuesday, September 19, 1939 in Pinos, Zacatecas, Mexico, the daughter of Bruno Hernandez and Teresa Chavira. 

Mrs. Hernandez was an individual who embodied a zest for life. She poised a driven, ambitious and diligent work ethic, never shying away from daunting tasks. Her unwavering love for her children and grandchildren was evident in numerous ways. Mrs. Hernandez was a selective individual who valued meaningful relationships creating deep bonds with her cherished friends. Gardening was another pursuit she was passionate about, with a special infinity for flowers. Her favorite colors were pink and lilac. She loved playing Loteria and checkers, showing her competitive spirit and inviting others to challenge her. Ms. Hernandez delighted celebrating the holidays with Easter being her most cherished, ensuring that her children and grandchildren had unforgettable experiences. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Diego Garza, a son: Diego Garza, Jr; siblings" Pascuala Gonzalez, Juaquina Hernandez, Pablo Hernandez, Vidal Hernandez, Gavino Hernandez, Juan Hernandez, Cruz Hernandez, Adrian Hernandez, Baldomero Hernandez and Juan Hernandez.

She is survived by her children: Rosa Hernandez Ayala, Maria Elena Sanchez Hernandez, Erasmo Hernandez Perales, Esmeralda Ayala, Leticia Zarate, Blanca Estela Hernandez, Francisco Garza, Maria Garza, and Narciso Garza; grandchildren: Erica, Irma, Hector, Alejandro, Rogelio, Sanjuanita, Paulita, Rodrigo, Ana, Roberto, Lupe, Cristina, Miguel Angel, Jose Jesus, Esmeralda, Elias III, Martin, Autumn, Armani, and Justin. 

Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 with a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm at Rivera Funeral Home, 1901 Pecan Blvd., McAllen. Chapel Service will be held at 12:00 pm Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at Rivera Funeral Home, McAllen. Interment will follow at San Jose Cemetery, South Stewart Rd., Mission. 

Service arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Rivera Funeral Home of McAllen.
